Sen. Dan McKeon announces resignation before state senators vote on expulsion

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska State Sen. Dan McKeon announced he will no longer represent District 41 in the Senate on Tuesday.
“With deep prayer and careful discernment, I’ve come to the decision that I am resigning my position at this time,” McKeon said.
The decision comes after the legislature’s executive board voted unanimously to push the resolution calling for his expulsion to the Senate floor on Monday.

McKeon said he reached this conclusion on Monday night after speaking with his wife and hearing a message from God.
“This is what God told me to do,” he said. “I’ve got to listen to Him. Once we start listening to man too much, it’s not a good thing.”
McKeon made the announcement just before the Senate was set to vote on his expulsion.
The Senator was cited for misdemeanor “public indecency” by the Nebraska State Patrol and is accused of inappropriately touching an employee at a party in May of 2024.

“I offer my sincere apology,” he said. “My words and actions were careless, regardless of the intent. I accept the responsibility for the impact of my words and my actions. I regret the circumstances that have led to this process and moment.”
Several state senators approached McKeon shortly afterward, offering their respect for his courage.
For District 41, Governor Jim Pillen will announce his appointment on Wednesday, before the special election in November.
“I think whoever’s selected, they just have to understand all of these districts are different,” McKeon said. “District 41 is all rural, agriculture. I’m hoping the next person he selects understands agriculture, because that’s what it is.”
