Senior Day Sweep: No. 20 Nebraska softball ends regular season in walk-off fashion

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The No. 20-ranked Nebraska softball team ended its regular season on a high note Sunday, walking-off Maryland 9-1 in six innings.

It was senior day for the Huskers, and Ava Bredwell, Abbie Squier, Haidyn Warner and McKinley Malecha each got their opportunity to play in Bowlin Stadium for the last time.

Bredwell went 1-for-3 from the plate with an RBI, while Squier went 0-for-2, but also had an RBI.

“I’m just so grateful for Husker nation and everybody involved,” said Bredwell. “It really truly means so much to me to have been part of the team here. I can’t even put it into words.”

Malecha got the opportunity to pinch run in the fourth inning.

As a team, the Huskers tallied 10 hits while the Terrapins only had three.

Head Coach Rhonda Revelle says Nebraska Softball still has better days ahead.

“We’re looking to just keep stacking good days after good days,” said Revelle. “We feel like our best softball is still ahead of us.”

The Huskers are now at 409 runs on the season, which is the highest total in program history. The previous record was 400 runs in 2015.

Today marked the Huskers’ 22nd run-rule win of the season, which is the most in program history.

Bella Bacon led the Huskers with a 3-for-3 showing from the plate, totaling and RBI and a double.

Ava Kuszak went 2-for-3, hitting a walk-off, 2-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. Kuszak totaled three RBIs on the day.

Jordyn Bahl (22-5) got the win on the mound, pitching four hitless innings with seven strikeouts. With the Big Ten Tournament coming up, Bahl feels the Huskers are on right where they need to be.

“This weekend was the exclamation point for the regular season,” said Bahl. “Now that we’re here we’re just so excited to focus on the Big Ten Tournament and everything moving forward.”

Nebraska’s total weekend attendance at Bowlin Stadium was 7,929, which is the highest total attendance for a three-game series in program history.

With today’s win, NU earned the No. 3 seed and a bye in the Big Ten Tournament

Nebraska will play the winner of Penn State and Iowa on Thursday at 11 a.m. on the Big Ten Network.
