Seven regions across Nebraska to host Civics Bee for first time ever
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The National Civics Bee is preparing to take place right here in Nebraska.
For the first time ever, seven regions across the state will host the competition.
Those include Fremont, Columbus, Sarpy County, Cheyenne County, Kearney, South Sioux City and Seward.
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade will take the stage to flex their knowledge for a chance to win cash prizes, trophies and recognition.
The President & CEO of Seward County Chamber & Development Partnership, Jonathan Jank, said this boosts the community and helps put Seward on the map.
“We’re the Fourth of July town, so this fits really well within our culture locally speaking, and it’s an opportunity to showcase the town,” Jank said.
The competition will help students strengthen their civics, writing and public speaking skills.
According to Kelly Bartling, the Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Nebraska Chamber, this helps to boost communities.
“The key to strong businesses is a strong community,” Bartling said. “Being an active participant in civic engagement of communities and understanding civics is really important to a strong community and a strong Nebraska.”
Students can apply by submitting an essay by February 3rd, about ideas to better their community.
From there, judges will select finalists to advance to the regional competitions. The top three winners from each regional competition advance to the State Finals.
One finalist from each state receives a trip to the National Championship for big prizes.
