Severe cold continues; lovely, warmer days around the corner
New record “cold” highs were set on Tuesday as many either failed to warm above 0° or barely did. Below is a list of these new “cold” highs compared to the old records in each location, including Lincoln.
Dangerously cold conditions remain in place especially for the overnight and morning hours through Friday.
Eastern Nebraska is under a Cold Weather Advisory until noon today for wind chills of -20 to -30.
Out west, an Extreme Cold Warning for central and western Nebraska continues to be in effect until noon Thursday for wind chills of -30 to -40.
Remember to leave your faucets at a trickle during these extreme cold spells so your pipes don’t freeze! Also, keep checking in on loved ones during these prolonged periods of cold weather.
Wind chills throughout the day on Wednesday will try to warm around -10, still quite unpleasant.
Later Wednesday night, eastern Nebraska will join the Extreme Cold Warning to go into effect by 9 p.m. and last through 9 a.m. on Thursday for wind chills around -30 to -40. Again, the rest of the state will be within that warning through noon Thursday.
Another Cold Weather Advisory may be needed Thursday night into Friday morning with wind chills around -15 to -25 during that timeframe.
More sunshine and southerly winds will start to bring back temperatures that will be more comfortable especially by the weekend. Before we get there though, expect highs in the single digits until Friday.
The final week of February will feature a lot warmer weather. The temperature outlook over the western half of the United States has really good chances at being well above average through that week.
So we’ll be in for more spring-like temperatures around the corner and knowing that will help us brave these few bitterly cold days we have left.
