Severe storms possible by Monday evening, some could be intense
Storms of the weaker variety have been flaring up on radar throughout the morning hours this Monday, the first of July. Storms expected through the morning should wrap up by the early afternoon before the next round threatens severe weather this evening.
For the evening round, there is a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk across most of the state for scattered storms threatening potential severe weather.
The tornado threat will be highest in central Nebraska if storms can develop with some clearing and enough heating happens throughout the day.
Large hail will also be in the cards.
The damaging wind threat is greatest across southeast Nebraska for winds that could exceed 75 mph.
As a warm front lifts northeast through Monday, central Nebraska will be in the “warm sector” just behind it. If storms can tap into that environment after about 5 p.m. Monday, a couple strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging wind would all be possible.
Then the threat transitions into more of a damaging wind scenario with storms clustering across eastern Nebraska by Monday night.
This will be just the start of an active week looking ahead. The cold front may drive some strong to severe storms across southeast Nebraska by Tuesday afternoon. Then storm chances continue by Wednesday night into Thursday, the 4th of July.
Be sure to check back in for updates from the Storm Alert Team throughout the week with multiple days of severe weather possible across Nebraska.
