Seward Kiwanis Club gives students and families food vouchers amid government shutdown

SEWARD, Neb. (KLKN) — There’s some relief for families that rely on SNAP benefits, as funding was partially restored on Monday.

But as the government shutdown continues, many families are still feeling the impact.

The Seward Kiwanis Club stepped in to make sure students do not miss a meal.

“With the loss of SNAP benefits, a lot of families need more than just the weekend,” said Michelle Meyers, president of the Seward Kiwanis Club. “They need help buying milk and fresh food during the week, too. ”

The club launched a program that provides extra food vouchers for students and their families.

Even now, with SNAP partially funded again, the need has not gone away.

Each voucher covers essentials like milk, bread, fruits and vegetables.

Local businesses like Jones Bank partnered with the club to ensure families can use them without stigma or hassle.

The Kiwanis Club said its goal is simple — to keep children fed and families hopeful until the shutdown fully ends.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help because there are people in the community who are ready and willing to help,” Meyers said. “Feeding your family should not be something that you’re worried about.”
