Six new bison find their home on the range at Lincoln’s Pioneers Park
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Pioneers Park in Lincoln is now home to half a dozen new bison.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced Tuesday that the city has added six new bison to the herd at the Pioneers Park Nature Center.
“Today we celebrate the arrival of new animals here at Pioneers Park, but not just any new animals,” Baird said. “The American bison is a majestic symbol of our national identity and exists at the heart of the history of the North American prairie.”
The six female bison were bought at auction for $9,000 by the Friends of Pioneers Park Nature Center, officials said.
Pioneers Park now houses 12 bison.
Bison were first brought to Pioneers Park in 1931. The herd was last expanded in 2017 with three bison loaned from the Wildlife Safari Park in Ashland.
