Slightly cooler, breezy Wednesday; remaining dry through the weekend

After a trace of rain and some lightning/thunder for the first time of 2025 last night, we’re rather dry again through the weekend.

We even had storm reports (for wind). Gusts were around 50-60 mph at times with those thunderstorms tracking through southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. With a 61-mph wind gust near Mineola, Iowa, that prompted a severe thunderstorm warning that we barely missed out on in Nebraska.

Storm Reports

But speaking of being rather dry, this winter season is the fifth driest on record for Lincoln snowfall through February 25th.

Driest Winters Snow

Lincoln is usually closer to almost 21″ of snow through this point in February.

Compared to average snowfall, the entire state is still practically in a deficit. Lincoln/Omaha and the Sandhills are all running around 1-2 feet of snow below average. The only areas closer to normal are extreme southwest Nebraska and areas closer to Falls City.

Snow Departures

In the wake of a cold front now, ample sunshine is expected today. Decent northwest winds will mix down and work to keep us slightly cooler this Wednesday with highs in the upper 50s to around 60.

Day Planner Pivot

Northwest wind gusts across southeast Nebraska will peak around 30-35 mph late Wednesday morning and during the afternoon.

Jess Model Wind

Beyond today, we’ll be warming once again into Friday. Another cold front comes on Friday, bringing back strong northwesterly winds.

Yet this time, those wind gusts will be around 35-40 mph and increasing fire danger once more for most of the state.

Jess 3day Gma

Temperatures will struggle a little more on Saturday with a high closer to 50. We’ll definitely welcome incoming moisture early next week.

As warm temperatures continue into early March, most of that precipitation looks to fall as rain especially by Tuesday.
