Small snow chances this weekend, before winter storm Monday
The weather for most through the weekend will be calm, with a couple chances at light precipitation Friday evening and Saturday evening. A stronger system will be likely Monday into Tuesday, so the forecast below will walk you through what happens leading into the event (the weekend), then what we’re expecting for the bigger event (early next week).
THIS WEEKEND
Temperatures and conditions are not going to budge all that much today and into Saturday. Highs will be around the middle 30, with overcast skies before some clearing on Sunday.
Some light snow was ongoing in southwest Nebraska early on Friday, and that is expected to continue until tapering off this afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for southwest Nebraska until noon on Friday.
The light snow in southwest Nebraska will end as some snow develops along a frontal boundary through central Nebraska into Friday evening. Southeast Nebraska will have a light mix/snow take aim for the area Friday evening.
There’s a smaller chance for some light snow showers across eastern Nebraska again Saturday evening, but overall impacts will be low.
Additional light snow to fall from Friday and Saturday will be less than a half in for about everyone.
MONDAY INTO TUESDAY – WATCHING FOR WINTER STORM
As we continue to get a better grasp on guidance for next week, a winter storm looks likely. More snow this time around looks to accumulate across eastern Nebraska.
But what may cut into some of the totals across southeast Nebraska will be a rain/snow mix that starts first late Sunday into early Monday. A complete transition to snow will happen by Monday afternoon and comes to an end Tuesday morning.
Higher snow totals look increasingly likely for eastern Nebraska, with chances decreasing as you look farther west across the state. Expect travel impacts on both Monday and Tuesday to come from this winter storm.
Because as this system slides to the east and the snow starts to end, winds will be gusty around 30-40 mph. That will cause issues with blowing snow by Tuesday with a snapshot of winds expected below – strongest across eastern Nebraska.
After we work to settle after this stronger system Monday and Tuesday, much colder air will barge in from the north the following week for the middle of January.
