Snow and ice cause roof woes for Lincoln residents

As more and more snow builds up on city streets and sidewalks, it’s also piling up on roofs.

If your attic is poorly insulated that could spell big trouble for your home.

“As heat escapes through the ceiling and it melts the snow off your roof and the water goes toward the eaves of your home and as snow is melting and coming toward the gutters it freezes,” Frantz Antoine, with Xcel Roofing, said.

As more and more ice builds up and the ice starts melting that water has to go somewhere.

“When it melts it goes through the wood, gets in the attic and go into the ceiling,” Antoine said.

This can lead to rotted wood and mold in your home.

The best thing to do is call a professional as soon as snow starts building up.

“We blow off the snow and have special tools to melt the ice and make sure it’s all off the roof,” Antoine said.

He said trying to remove the ice yourself can cause more damage to your shingles and roof. Many professionals will also get into your attic and check your insulation to prevent the ice from building up again.

Xcel will also provide a free inspection of your roof to see if any damage has been sustained. Give them a call at 402-345-9235.
