Snow continues for some out west, south; turning into frozen tundra

Cold and snow, snow and cold.

Lincoln (and most of the state) is under an Extreme Cold Warning for dangerous wind chills dropping to around 30-35 below zero this morning. Eastern Nebraska is under this warning through noon Tuesday, meanwhile the rest of the state will be under this warning through noon Thursday.

Far southeast Nebraska is under a Cold Weather Advisory through noon Tuesday for wind chills as low as -31.

** Frostbite under these conditions statewide can happen in as little as 10 minutes when the wind chill is around 30 below zero. ** Be sure to check in on loved ones and protect any pets in conditions like this through the end of the week.

The coldest wind chills will happen in the morning, but the afternoon and evening wind chills will be awful as well. The “warmest” wind chills across Nebraska will be by Tuesday evening with less wind by then.

Here’s a few snow reports from what the area saw on Monday, February 17th. The Lincoln airport measured just 2″, but there were other reports around 3-4″ across town. Fremont and Norfolk both measured a half foot of new snow.

Some are in for a little more snow on and off through Tuesday night. Those areas are under a Winter Weather Advisory through about 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, or a little longer for extreme southwest Nebraska.

Areas out west may be tacking on another 2-3″ by the time the snow wraps up late Tuesday into early Wednesday.
