Snow expected in Nebraska starting Thanksgiving into the weekend

Happy Thanksgiving!! Early in the morning, Lincoln hosted the annual Turkey Trot, and trotters faced some stronger winds from the north.

A cold front has moved through, with colder air expected Thursday. Wind chills were in the 20s as runners started that event around 8:00 a.m.

Turkey Trot

Highs will be in the lower 40s on Thanksgiving but only make it to the 30s for the Husker game on Friday.

We’ll be overcast all day, with winds out of the northeast at 10 to 20 mph, making for a colder gameday.

We know we can get just about any type of weather at this point in the season, but the snow will remain off to the west through Friday.

Huskers

Speaking of the snow, western Nebraska is expected to see the worst of it, with many winter weather alerts already in place starting as soon as Thursday afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning (counties in pink below) has been issued for heavy snow expected from Thursday through Saturday.

A Winter Weather Advisory (counties in purple) has been issued for counties expected to see less snow, but the time frame is still the same: Thursday through Saturday.

The Winter Storm Watch for Dundy, Hitchcock and Red Willow counties is expected to turn into either an advisory or warning for snow, but heavy snow is expected through those areas at this time as well.

Winter Alerts

Stormcast shows this system starting in far northwest Nebraska by Thursday afternoon. Snow will expand across western Nebraska through the day on Friday.

As this eventually tries to move into central Nebraska late Friday into Saturday, it will run into some dry air. That should cut total accumulations down, as snow can’t contend with the dry air.

For eastern Nebraska, there are better chances to see snow from a second round that gets going in Kansas, where most of the heavy snow will stay.

South of Interstate 80 in southeast Nebraska has the best chance to see on-and-off light snow Saturday through the overnight hours into Sunday.

The highest snow totals will be to the west. Less is expected to come to eastern Nebraska.

Winds should also remain light through this event, so impacts from blowing or drifting snow should be at a minimum.

Heavy snow will still have a large impact on travel and make conditions difficult for those in western Nebraska.

Jb Snow Map

Light snow will come to an end early Sunday, and whatever accumulates shouldn’t last long.

We’ll be warming back into the 40s and almost 50s to end November and start December.
