Snow removal work continues into the evening

Sunday was a busy day for snow removers.

The Sunday morning snowfall caused a number of accidents on area interstate roads, even causing one to close for a few hours.

Ken Konwinski has been removing snow for over 15 years.

He says, even though the worst of Sunday’s storm may be behind us, it’s important to watch out for slick spots over the next few days.

“You have to be aware that it can re–freeze really easy in spots like bridges and overpasses. Do not use your cruise and just watch what the road looks like,” said Konwinski.

The wind gusts were a big problem for drivers this morning.

Westbound I–80 from Waverly to Ashland was closed due to multiple jackknifed semis.

The snow paired with strong wings created dangerous conditions for drivers.

“They closed the interstate down for a little while and got some wreckers in there and got most of them pulled out that were going to be in traffic and the rest of them will probably sit until tomorrow when the roads are a little bit better,” said Konwinski.

Fortunately, none of the drivers involved were injured and the interstate is back open for use.

Konwinski says the biggest two things drivers can do to help in these conditions is to reduce their speed and watch the road carefully.

Konwinski expects to be on the job for a while longer today, he won’t clock out until the job is done.

“We’re going to stay until it’s either cleaned up or until the night crew comes in again. We definitely will not leave until the roads are good again.”

Drivers are encouraged to check the Nebraska 511 map for access to current road conditions.
