Snow showers possible Thursday

Eyes are on an approaching weather system that will bring a chance of snow to Nebraska Thursday.  While it does not appear there will be much precipitation to work with, there will be no shortage of cold air.  The snow that does fall should be light and fluffy.  Because of the cold air at the surface, and a few thousand feet above the ground, I think snow to liquid ratios could be 20:1 to 24:1.

The amount of liquid water available to produce snow is relatively light.  Around southeast Nebraska a 7-computer model average suggests anywhere from 0.02″ to 0.07″ of liquid precipitation possible Thursday.  That works out to 0.4″ to 1.7″ of snow.  Generally speaking, I think an inch or two (at most) is possible with higher amounts in the central and northeastern corner of the state.

For the Lincoln area I think we are talking about less than an inch, and more likely a half inch of snow, should fall Thursday.

Snow will begin to move in to southeast Nebraska mid-morning Thursday.  It will quickly spread east/northeast by midday.  Snow should be out of the area by late afternoon.
