Sole Democrat-appointed justice on Nebraska Supreme Court to retire
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The longest-serving justice on the Nebraska Supreme Court is stepping down.
On Wednesday, Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman announced her retirement, effective Oct. 31.
She is the only justice on the court appointed by a Democrat, having been selected by Gov. Ben Nelson in 1998.
Miller-Lerman made history as the first woman on the state’s highest court.
She previously served on the Nebraska Court of Appeals.
“It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Nebraska as an appellate judge since 1992,” Miller-Lerman wrote in her retirement notice to Gov. Jim Pillen.
A commission will now solicit potential nominees for the seat, which represents Douglas County.
The commission will send the finalists to Pillen, who will appoint a replacement.
This will be Pillen’s third Supreme Court pick.
