SCHUYLER, Neb. (KLKN) – At least 110 immigrants were detained Wednesday night in Schuyler, an anonymous source tells Channel 8.

People in town said 110 people make a visible difference in a city of only 6,000 people.

Some immigrants who are here legally said they do not feel comfortable being filmed out of fear of potential repercussions for family members who are not here legally.

The nonprofit Centro Hispano did not confirm whether there were any arrests.

But Executive Director Karina Perez said the general framing of some of President Donald Trump’s executive orders creates a lot for fear for immigrant families.

“You know we’ve been in this community for quite some time,” she said. “We’ve endured the mistreatment and the racism that has been happening in our community for years.”

Channel 8 called Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, but due to high call volumes, the line was busy.

The Schuyler Police Department said it was not aware of any large-scale deportations or raids by ICE.

“The recent rumors on Social Media and false news reports are causing fear in our community,” Chief Robert Farber said in a press release.

But people in Schuyler said they’ve seen agents go door to door in the small city.

Employees at nearby stores said two Hispanic-owned grocery stores have been closed for two days because of the fear of ICE.

Members of Centro Hispano urged families, whether they are at risk of deportation or not, to remain aware at all times.

“So we’re just trying to remind folks that we have gotten through this,” Perez said. “We are a determined community, and a reminder that there is a lot of communities that are supportive of our immigrant families.”
