A 14-year-old girl had to fight off an attacker Monday night, police said.  While she’s safe, neighbors say they are worried.

It happened in a neighborhood near 31st and Old Cheney Road.

"This is where we live, and where we’re growing up, and to think we have to be scared about going outside is nerve wracking,” 14-year-old Montana Krutz said.

14–year–old Montana, and her best–friend Deighton Greving are worried for their safety after the incident happened so close to their homes.

Police said the victim was walking when a man in a black sedan approached her.

"He told her that he had kids at home her age that wanted to play with her,” Officer Angela Sands said. “He got out of the car and grabbed her arm and tried to pull her toward the car."

Sands said the victim was able to kick him and run away, but that hasn’t stopped the concern.

"This is where I walk every day,” Greving said. “This is where I hang out with my friends, and it worries me what friend of mine it could have been, it could have been me."

Parents said they’re shocked.

"I want to lock the door and never let her out again,” Lisa Kurtz, Montana’s mom said. “I can’t do that and shouldn’t have to. She should be able to feel safe in our neighborhood and now so many people don’t."

Robyn Taylor, another parent in the area said residents are always keeping an eye on each other’s children.

It’s shocking to me that this could happen in that amount of time,” Taylor said. “And none of us were there to help that girl."

Taylor said she’s now they’re preparing their own kids for the worst.

"We’re going to be more on edge, kids walking alone won’t happen, I’ll always be with them, we’ll be reviewing safety measures.”

Her 10-year-old daughter Hailey said this is scary, and has her listening to her mom’s advice.

"I don’t talk to strangers and don’t go near a car and always tell mom where I’m going,” Hailey said.

Montana, said the same.

"We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing,” she said. “Just stay more alert and aware of our surroundings, look behind us and make sure we always have our phones with us."

The victim described the suspect as a white male with white hair and a stubby beard.

He was wearing a black sweatshirt, gray pants and black Adidas shoes.

Police are still looking for this person, and ask that anyone with information call police at 402-441-6000.
