Southeast Community College hosts construction career day

MILFORD, Neb. (KLKN) – Nearly 300 high school students from around the area took part in hands-on construction activities at Southeast Community College on Tuesday.
“There is such demand for skilled trades, especially in the construction industry,” said Edward Koster, vice president for technology at SCC , so it’s important to show students what those careers look like.
Students went to different stations around the campus to get a taste of different jobs and construction classes.
They did brick laying, concrete placement and much more.
And current SCC students helped the professionals teach the high schoolers what to do.
“Some of them it doesn’t register with them just how much they’ve learned until they start to showcase that skill set to somebody else,” said Jason Adams, program director for building construction technology at the Milford campus
Koster said 90% to 94% of students who attend SCC either continue their education or get jobs in the field they went to school for.
Adams said that any high school student who missed the event can contact the admissions office to schedule a tour or a class observation.
He said that enrollment is steadily rising at SCC and that the school is running out of space for students in the construction track.
Koster said SCC is planning t0 build a new construction technology center on the Milford campus.
It’s anticipated to be 90,000 square feet and cost about $40 million.
Once donors, funding and approvals are secured, the project is expected to begin.
