Southern Nebraska church damaged in fire amid renovation work
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A church in southern Nebraska suffered major damage in a Thursday morning fire.
A parishioner discovered the fire at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, which is south of Hastings.
The Catholic Diocese of Lincoln said the church had heavy smoke damage. The floor was also damaged.
The church, which was undergoing extensive renovations, will be out of service for an unknown amount of time.
“It is so unfortunate. Their renovations were almost complete,” Bishop James Conley said in a statement. “Thanks be to God nobody was hurt and it was discovered early in the morning and the church was saved.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
