Star City Pride adds more security ahead of events in Lincoln this weekend

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Crews are setting the stage for what’s expected to be one of Lincoln’s biggest pride weekends.

“Pride to our organization means being able to celebrate who you are in terms of being your true, authentic self.” said Andrew Dominguez-Farias, president of Star City Pride.

He said pride in Lincoln is more than just a parade. For many, it’s a moment of visibility, unity, and freedom.

But this year, organizers said safety is at the top of their checklist.

Dominguez-Farias said because Star City Pride has a new venue this year, it is adding more security.

The increased precautions come at a time when pride events across the country are seeing more safety concerns.

“We view pride as a multifaceted thing,” Dominguez-Farias said. “We are enduring a lot in the moment as the LGBTQ community. You know, queer folks are under attack at our local levels, state Legislature and as well as nationally.”

He said the goal is to stay proactive without losing the heart of the celebration.

“We’re ensuring that we continue to have a private security firm that’s able to offer assistance at our Woods Park (event), as well as our pride festival event,” he said.

Dominguez-Farias said Lincoln Police Department officers will also be present at the parade and outside of the festival venue.

He hopes all the behind-the-scenes work gives the LGBTQ+ community and allies, the freedom and the sense of safety to simply show up and enjoy.

“At Star City Pride, we really try to create welcoming events for our queer community, especially our queer youth,” Dominguez-Farias said. “It’s really just a space for folks to remind us there is queer people in Lincoln, there are queer people in Nebraska. We want to have this environment where folks know they can be themselves.”
