UPDATE: State, Lancaster County see record voter registrations

UPDATED:

On Tuesday, the Lancaster County Election Commission announced a record number of voter registrations for not only mid–terms, but for elections in general.

“We actually have more…voter registrations than we had in the 2016 general election,” said Commissioner David Shively.

Shively is projecting about 106,000 voters will cast ballots Tuesday.

This would be a turnout percentage of 55 percent of the voters registered in the county and a record turnout of voters for a mid–term election.

Shively said the increase in Lancaster County is not just from population growth.

“I think we’re seeing, nationally, an interest in the mid–term elections, more so than we’ve seen previously,” he said.  “Certainly two here in Lancaster County.  “We have a couple issues that are on the ballot, including the Medicaid expansion issue as well as term limits for the city’s mayor.”

He said a U.S. Senate race on the ballot will also garner more voter interest.

He said the biggest growth they’ve seen is the number of voters registering as non–partisan.

“While the two major parties have kind of maintained their numbers compared to what we had two years ago during the presidential election…but the dramatic change has been in those people that are not affiliating with a party.”

The state of Nebraska is also seeing big numbers.  It announced Thursday it has reached a new record number of registered voters, totaling 1.2 million.

In addition to the voter registration record, Nebraska voters have requested early ballots in record numbers for a mid–term election, nearly 214,000.

Here in Lancaster County, Commissioner Shively said he’s expecting 30 percent of votes will be done by early voting.

Voters wishing to vote early in person at their county election office must do so by close of business on Monday.

All early ballots must be received by the close of the polls on November 6th to be counted.
