Students at Ruth Hill Elementary welcomed some special guests. Ben franklin and State Treasurer Don Stenberg taught them the importance of saving money. Here’s Monday, May 4ths “Excellence in Education” report.

The 4th grade students packed the cafeteria to participate in a question and answer segment about the value of a dollar. College might be close to a decade away for these students, but they learned that it’s never too early to start saving. A modern day Ben franklin who once said “a penny saved is a penny earned” also spoke to the students. They admit, saving money is hard!

“Maybe to help save money for my car, maybe a phone, or my house when I grow up,” says Andrew Fricke.

“I learned saving money is important, but it’s difficult to do sometimes because you’re just like I need to save for this, but I want to buy this right now,” says Lauren Swan.

“A recent test was given to some college freshman and two–thirds of them flunked the financial literacy test. So we need to do a better job educating our young people about the importance of saving,” says Don Stenberg.

The state treasurer says some of us adults can also learn a lot about saving money. More than half of adults don’t have a three month security blanket.
