Storms pose severe risk across Nebraska Monday and Tuesday

We were gifted with a quiet, pleasant weekend with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Light winds were accompanied by lower dew points, making for a great couple days in July!

But the first couple days of this next week will bring back storms and hotter temperatures. Winds will pick up out of the southwest/southeast too, fueling storms each evening.

Weekend Fcst 2

Monday’s chances start a bit earlier in the day. Models show storms popping by about 2 p.m. through north central and northeast Nebraska, moving southeast and toward Lincoln by Monday evening. All modes of severe weather are possible, as a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk has been issued for most. Lincoln sits on the edge, as storms are generally expected to weaken upon arrival.

Monday Spc

Here’s a look at Stormcast showing the initial storms by Monday afternoon. They grow in size especially for those in northeast Nebraska and from about Grand Island west. The cluster through south central Nebraska shows that it will likely hold on longer into Monday night before all is said and done by 10 p.m.

Then we do it all again on Tuesday. Heat indices before the storms could reach 100° again by the afternoon because of humidity. And this time, stronger storms are more likely to reach Lincoln. These storms will be starting off later in the evening than what we see on Monday, racing toward the southeast. All modes of severe weather are possible again Tuesday, with the Slight risk area including Lincoln and southeast Nebraska into early Wednesday.

Tues Spc

This kicks off several chances that we see through the next week, hopefully adding to our great rain totals for July so far. We’ll get another update from the Storm Prediction Center by early Monday morning, so be sure to tune in to Meteorologist Malcolm Byron in the morning for the latest!
