Stormy week rolls on; severe threat over southeast Nebraska into Tuesday afternoon

How does that Nebraska song go… “we’ll all stick together in all kinds of weather” … yeah, we’ve done plenty of the all kinds of weather this year. Monday evening into early Tuesday, several tornadoes were reported first in south central Nebraska.

Then as storms barreled toward Lincoln, a tornado was spotted on the ground on the southwest side of town – near Martell. Damage was reported from that potential tornado with a roof ripped from a farm, a silo destroyed and extensive tree damage.

Heavy rainfall dumped on Lincoln – especially the north side. Impressive totals have ranged from over 3 – 5″ out that way, with some rainfall amounts adding up to almost 7″ northeast of town toward Ashland and Papillion.

A Flood Warning remains in effect until Tuesday afternoon for Lincoln and surrounding areas because of all the recent rain.

And we are far from done yet this week. As a cold front moves east, we’ll see more scattered storms try to form into the afternoon hours. A Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk is in place over southeast Nebraska, including Lincoln. Our main threats would be damaging wind and some hail up to golf ball size out of this round.

Most of Wednesday looks rather dry too until nighttime. Another strong wave of storms will be moving through western Nebraska, weakening as they move into eastern Nebraska.

And there will be more storm chances Thursday afternoon and evening, too. We’re keeping a close eye on each round for impacts to holiday plans.

The severe threat by Wednesday will favor western Nebraska out toward Valentine, North Platte and McCook.

Then Lincoln is on the edge of a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk by Thursday in which just a storm or two may be borderline severe.

We’ll look to a somewhat quieter pattern by the end of this week possibly lasting over the weekend.
