Strong, severe storms Monday into Tuesday across most of Nebraska

Another day to tack onto this warm stretch. Highs on Monday will be nearing the middle 80s ahead of several rounds of thunderstorms in Nebraska.

Gusty winds out of the southeast could be as strong as 30 to 40 mph in eastern Nebraska throughout the day.

But the stronger, severe storms will be especially likely late tonight into Tuesday morning.

The latest severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center has a broad Enhanced (Level 3 of 5) risk for much of Nebraska. This risk expanded from Sunday into Monday morning, with confidence higher across a wider area for mainly large hail.

Hail could be up to 2 inches (if not a bit larger in isolated events), especially in the dashed area below Monday evening into Tuesday morning. The dashes mean there’s a better chance of significant hail (2 inches or bigger) within 25 miles of a point of that area.

The tornado risk has also increased for central Nebraska, where tornadoes are most likely. The dashed lines mean significant tornadoes (EF2 or higher) are possible within 25 miles of a point within that area.

Damaging winds also cannot be ruled out.

Again, the main reason for the Enhanced risk is the large hail threat, but a few tornadoes and gusts as high as 70 mph are also possible. Isolated flash flooding could also occur.

The first storms will mainly develop north of Interstate 80 along the warm front late Monday afternoon and evening.

Another round will then fire near south-central Nebraska and advance east into southeast Nebraska by morning along a dry line feature.

Scattered, weaker storms are possible after 7 a.m. Tuesday, with small hail and some gusty winds possible. A brief spin-up cannot be ruled out toward Omaha and the area of Slight risk, either.

Showers will be likely again late Wednesday into Thursday, with a cooling trend throughout this week. Temperatures will drop from the mid-80s to the mid-50s by the end.
