Strong storms likely Wednesday through Thursday
An active end to the week is expected. The severe weather potential for Wednesday has shifted north, yet there will be chances for showers and storms starting in the afternoon and evening in parts of SE Nebraska. Our best chance to see strong to severe storms locally will be Thursday.
The Storm Prediction Center has updated parts of SE Nebraska out of the Marginal Risk for severe weather. Showers and thunderstorms are still possible, mainly in the late afternoon and evening.
A majority of the strong thunderstorm activity will be in north and eastern Nebraska on Wednesday. The second wave of storms will arrive Thursday afternoon and evening. Following the cold air, the Panhandle could see snow Thursday evening.
A level 2 Slight risk for severe weather is in place for much of SE Nebraska, with surrounding areas in a level 1 Marginal risk. A cold front will provide us with a decent chance for severe weather. All severe weather hazards are possible on Thursday.
The heavy rainfall looks to stay to the north and eastern parts of Nebraska, with much of the state under some potential to see any precipitation. Some areas may see more or less rainfall depending on how long the storm lingers.
As for Wednesday’s rain chances, models show a chance for showers and possible storms as early as the afternoon, our chances increase heading into the evening hours.
A High Wind Watch is in place for much of western and central Nebraska. Winds gusting up to 60 mph will be possible until Friday Evening.
A passing warm front will put Wednesday’s high temperatures into the 70s and low 80s. These temperatures won’t linger as the approaching cold front will cool us down by Friday.
