Strong storms possible Tuesday night
Spotty showers are moving through northeast Nebraska early Tuesday morning. These showers will fade away as the morning wears on, and it does appear that this rain will miss Lincoln to the north. Tuesday will be a mostly dry day overall with partly cloudy skies. High temperatures should reach the mid-80s for much of the area.
Another round of storms will develop in the High Plains and move into western Nebraska during the afternoon and evening. These storms will likely be at their strongest in the hours leading up to sunset. We expect storms to arrive in southwest Nebraska by 7-8 p.m. Central Time.
These storms move east overnight Tuesday. While they should survive their trip to eastern Nebraska, the overall intensity will diminish. The storms will be near the Tri-Cities area by the 9-11 p.m. timeframe and closer to Lincoln after midnight.
SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL
Because the intensity of storms diminishes for areas farther east, the severe weather risk is also lower in those locations. A Level 1/5 risk for severe weather is in place for the easternmost part of the state, including Lincoln and Omaha.
A Level 2/5 severe weather risk includes much of central and western Nebraska, with a Level 3/5 risk in the far southwest reaches of the state.
The hazards that these storms might bring vary from zone to zone:
- Level 3/5 – Very large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two are possible.
- Level 2/5 – Damaging winds, isolated large hail, and perhaps an isolated spin-up. The hail/tornado potential drops off significantly the farther east you travel.
- Level 1/5 – Damaging winds and sporadic large hail.
Some storms could linger into Wednesday, and temperatures should remain on the cooler side. However, things will begin to warm up on Thursday. By Friday, highs could be back near 90°.
