LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Sunken Gardens’ annual planting party took place Saturday, seeing a record turnout.

The gardens are a Lincoln favorite, and this year’s event had the best turn out they’ve ever seen.

Employees say this weekend’s popularity is likely to do with families wanting to garden together over Mother’s Day.

“I think this event is so special because we have the jewel of the city right in the middle of town,” said Mike Fallon, Parks Public Garden Horticulturist. “We’re a public garden, were always open to everyone for free, and I think people just love to come and see the designs every year.”

Saturday was also the fastest everyone has been able to get all their plants in the ground; 15,000 plants were planted in just an hour, making it ready for public viewing.

This years theme for the garden is golden hours, taking inspiration from the first rays of dawn, and the Lincoln city flag.

“It’s a special time and it’s our kick-off to summer,” Fallon said.
