Suspect dead, three Omaha Police officers injured in gas station shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Three Omaha Police officers were injured, and the suspect is dead, following a shooting at a gas station in south Omaha on Wednesday.

Around 12:30 p.m., officers with the Omaha Police Department were sent to Phil’s Foodway near 30th Street and Ames Avenue to investigate a shooting.

According to OPD, a man in his 50s was shot multiple times in the chest.

Omaha Fire Department medics took the man to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition, the police department said.

Officers learned the suspect was a Hispanic male in his 20s and identified the vehicle he was driving.

Police said officers with the OPD Assault and Gang Units found the suspect’s vehicle in the area of 38th and Harrison streets.

Authorities followed the car to the QuikTrip near 32nd and L streets.

According to OPD, the suspect got out of the car, walked into the gas station, and entered the men’s restroom.

Officers tried to call the suspect out of the bathroom, and an initial exchange of gunfire occurred, according to police. One officer was hit at this time.

Police retreated outside the main bathroom door and positioned themselves before calling the suspect out again.

According to OPD, the suspect walked out of the bathroom and opened fire, injuring another officer.

Police said officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

OPD said there was one civilian inside the bathroom during the first round of shots. He was safely called out before the second encounter with the suspect.

A third officer was injured by shrapnel, according to police.

The injured officers were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

One officer has since been released, but the other two remain at the hospital to receive further treatment.

“This is a very dangerous day involving this suspect in the city of Omaha,” OPD Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said at a press conference outside the QT. “He has shot a citizen in our community, and he has shot at several law enforcement officers. Very dangerous day, as it relates to this particular suspect today.”

The officers involved have been placed on paid critical incident leave, per department policy.

According to OPD, various aspects of the shooting were captured on officers’ body-worn cameras and other available surveillance.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
