A suspect is in extremely critical condition after an Omaha officer shot him multiple times.
Police said the man is involved in a meth ring.
An Omaha undercover detective shot Jason Welch, 34, on Friday at a Walgreens.
Police said Welch was the passenger in a car that began ramming into a detective's car.
Officers said they yelled for the driver to stop and saw Welch reach towards the floor board.
Police thought he was grabbing a gun.
“He fired three times as he feared Mr. Welch was armed and reaching for a weapon,” Todd Schmaderer, Omaha Police Chief, said.
The SUV sped off. Since it was part of a drug investigation, it was under GPS surveillance and police found it early Saturday morning.
Welch was inside suffering from a gun shot wound. He is at the Nebraska Medical Center in extremely critical condition.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the department investigates.
