‘Symbol of hope’: Salvation Army of Lincoln lights Christmas tree
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Salvation Army of Lincoln held its annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday to kick off holiday fundraising.
For many in the Lincoln community, the tree has a larger meaning.
“The tree of lights is really a symbol of hope to our community,” said Capt. Kelsie Moreno, the commanding officer of the Salvation Army. “We’ve seen the need increase so much in the last several months with inflation and everything else. It’s really hitting families hard.”
Moreno said the goal is to raise $670,000 for families and children who need help this holiday season.
That money will help between 700 and 1,000 families in the Lincoln area.
So you may start to notice the bells and a red kettle outside of stores, with volunteers asking for donations.
Mark Whitehead, the president of Whitehead Oil, said it’s something that’s incredibly important during this time of year.
“Giving a hand up to those who need it is special,” he said. “It’s special, and it feels good, and it’s the right thing.”
Moreno said if you can’t spare money, the Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers to stand with the kettles outside of stores.
