LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) –The government is giving you a little extra time to get your taxes in this year. Normally taxes are due on April 15, but this year Tax Day falls on a Saturday, giving millions of Americans more time to submit their 2022 tax returns.

The next business day is Monday, April 17, but Americans will have an additional day to submit returns because April 16, is recognized as Emancipation Day in Washington D.C.

Emancipation Day ended slavery in the district in 1862 freeing 3,100 people.

According to the IRS website, Washington, D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines the same way federal holidays do.

Because of this, Americans now have until Tuesday, April 18, to submit tax returns.

If you live in a state where sever weather occurred, you may be allowed a filing extension. To see a list of states that qualify for severe weather extensions click here.
