Teens caught trying to steal car for social media challenge, Lincoln Police say
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two teens were caught trying to steal a car for a social media challenge, Lincoln Police say.
Around 5:00 p.m., officers arrived at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo parking lot and immediately took a 13 and 15-year-old into custody.
An investigation showed the teens had taken apart a Hyundai Santa Fe’s ignition in an attempt to start the vehicle, police say.
A witness told officers the two had been recording themselves while trying to steal the vehicle.
The teens admitted to officers they were taking part in a viral social media challenge, according to police.
Police say the teens also admitted to stealing a car back on July 9.
The teens were referred on suspicion of possession of burglars’ tools and theft by unlawful taking.
