The 5 Dollar Bits of Chair Trophy

While there are many of college football trophies that are played for every week, the 5 Dollar Bits of Broken Chair Trophy is truly unique because this isn’t for the players and coaches, it’s for the fans.

That’s why both fan bases gravitate toward this rivalry, because of its authenticity.

“It’s the friendliest rivalry you’re ever going to get where we are respectful of each other and yet because we’re both such nice people it just seemed like a natural fit to have a rivalry,” said the Nebraska Organizer Luke Petersen

This was all started after a simple Twitter exchange 4 years ago.

The Husker, and Golden Gopher fans then met through a college football Reddit message board. Which they then decided to build their very own trophy to keep the legacy alive.

“I think we have a lot in common as fan bases and to be able to work together is something that I think is just natural,” said the Minnesota Organizer Joe Bernard.

The group has raised thousands through the last few years for the university of Minnesota Masonic Children’s hospital, and for the Team Jack Foundation.

The raised that money through their goundme page, and from going to tailgate to tailgate getting cash donations.

“It’s really been mind-blowing both last year and this year we spent time at tailgates at both schools and it’s surprising how many people come up to you and know exactly what you’re doing,” says Bernard.

While the trophy isn’t going to be inside Memorial Stadium today, the group’s goal is to see a long and prosperous future for the 5 Dollar Bits of Chair Trophy.

“I want to see Adrian Martinez hoisting it above his head as the winning Quarterback of a Minnesota game in couple of years,” said Petersen.
