The 90s return along with storm chances

UPDATE – 12:05 p.m. Monday:

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded southwestern Nebraska to an enhanced (Level 3/5) risk for severe weather. This is an area where storm clusters may approach from both the north and west. Damaging winds and large hail are still the primary concerns, but there is an emphasis on the wind threat in the orange-shaded area.

Severe Weather Outlook - Tuesday Afternoon Update

A slight (Level 2/5) risk still extends into central and northeast Nebraska. Other than the upgrade to the severe weather risk in southwest Nebraska, the forecast from the original story is still on track for Monday night.

ORIGINAL STORY:

After a cool weekend by summer standards, the heat and humidity return to kick off the workweek. Almost all of the daytime hours on Monday will feature sunny skies. It will be hot, and a bit humid, with high temperatures in the low-90s.

Monday Forecast

By late Monday afternoon, we will be watching some storm development in central Nebraska along a surface boundary. These storms will move south and southeast as the night wears on. Evening storms will be possible in southeast Nebraska.

Stormcast Monday Evening

These storms will be operating on a scattered basis, so not everyone will experience them. In fact, some locations may miss out on rain altogether. However, some spots will see locally heavy rain on Monday evening. That trend is evident with the following run of Stormcast.

Stormcast Precipitation Accumulation

Any storms that do form have the potential to be severe on Monday evening, with some cells capable of producing at least 60 mph winds and/or quarter-size hail. The tornado threat looks low.

There is a slight (level 2/5) risk for severe weather in the yellow-shaded area for a corridor extending from southwest, through central, and into northeast Nebraska. That is where the highest severe weather risk resides.

Lincoln is included in the marginal (level 1/5) risk zone, indicating much lower severe weather odds. By the time storms would arrive closer to Lincoln, it will be a time of night when they have less energy to work with.

Severe Weather Outlook - Monday

There is also a slight risk of severe weather on Tuesday. This time, the Level 2/5 risk zone includes Lincoln. While most of Tuesday will be mostly sunny, evening scattered storms can’t be ruled out for another night.

We can make the argument that the severe weather risk on Tuesday evening is a little bit higher if storms can form. Large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two are possible.
