The File of Life: How you can help Lincoln first responders help you

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Fire & Rescue is promoting the File of Life program.

The File of Life is a card you can keep in your home that will give first responders information right away when they arrive.

The card provides a person’s name, birthday, emergency contacts, health conditions, medications and other health care information.

It’s kept in a small red envelope, and officials recommend putting it on your refrigerator or out in the open.

Officials say when seconds matter, the card can be the difference in getting someone the proper treatment.

LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said it’s especially helpful if someone is unresponsive in an emergency.

“Or sometimes in an emergency you just forget things,” she said. “It’s usually for the elderly, somebody that we might go on the call, and they can’t speak for themselves.”

The File of Life cards are available for free at any Lincoln fire station, as well as at the Aging Partners offices.

You can also ask a firefighter for one if you see them around town.
