‘The game was amazing’: Husker basketball fans excited to beat Iowa
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – On Sunday, the Husker women’s basketball team beat No. 2 Iowa.
After the game, Husker fans leaving Pinnacle Bank Arena said they were thrilled with the outcome after a close game.
“Made the heart beat a little faster,” Bill Peglow said. “We were surrounded by Iowans, so it was extra fun,” his wife, Barbara, said.
Many fans said it was great to see so many people show up to support women’s sports, and they hope the momentum continues.
Bridgette Bellows said she used to be a division one athlete and loved seeing the packed arena.
“The game was amazing,” she said. “I love nothing more than to see people show up and support women’s athletics. Some good moves on the court today, super athletic, good talent all around.”
Esme Figueroa and Caitlyn Venne, both Iowa fans, said they were a bit disappointed.
“It was a good game, fun to watch,” Figueroa said.
“A tough loss, Nebraska really made us play,” Venne said. “We drove about two hours to come to this game, so we were excited. This was our first game we were able to watch the Hawks in person.”
The two said it was great to see Huskers and Hawkeyes unite in support of the sport.
“It’s about time that more women’s sports are getting the recognition,” Venne said. “I mean they work just as hard, so to get the support and have just as packed of a stadium here is exciting.”
Brecken and Macy, two young Husker fans, said they already play basketball and look up to the team.
“It was really nice to beat the number two team,” Brecken said. “It was really, really cool. Great comeback.”
The two said they’re hoping to play with the Husker women’s team someday.
