LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) –After years of working in the automotive industry, Delta Nelson thought it was time take a leap of faith and start her own mechanics shop.

She’d open The Mechanix Garage and be the sole owner. She became the only woman in Lincoln to fully own an automotive shop. Something she’s very proud of considering it’s a male dominated industry.
“Well, it’s less than 20% of females that are in the automotive industry, let alone that own an automotive shop,” Nelson said.
According to the most recent survey done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 9% of the employees working in the auto repair and maintenance industry are women. It’s why Nelson works hard to be a pioneer and mentor for other women looking join the business.
She said there’s been plenty of times she’s had a male question her knowledge on mechanics but then she happily proves them wrong. Nelson said it’s important for women to feel empowered and confident in whatever field they want to work in, male dominated or not.
“Have the confidence, have the conviction in what you do. Just like anything else in your life, if you want it, go for it, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise,” Nelson said.
