‘The sport has expanded so much’: Husker volleyball elevating the sport with national coverage
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — From the Devaney Center to living rooms and watch parties, Husker Volleyball is back and reaching more screens.
With the team having around 20 matches nationally televised this season, the sport is picking up momentum far beyond Nebraska.
“I think especially for all of the little kids growing up and getting to see it, and the sport has expanded so much that it’s doing nothing but good things,” said Husker fan Wade Geiken. “It’s driving support, it’s bringing it out on a national stage and Nebraska has been the leader of that. They continue to find ways to push it.”
In the railyard, restaurants like The Corner Bar offer fans a place to watch the matches and relax with friends.
Manager David Soholt said having these televised games is always good for business.
“Previous seasons, it’s always been a huge event for fans coming out to support the volleyball team,” he said. “It’s great to see especially in a sport like volleyball that doesn’t traditionally get as big of the support as some of the other sports in college.”
He said he can usually count on fans to show up and cheer on the Huskers, proving just how much the team has elevated the sport.
And he has high hopes for the rest of the season.
“I feel like it’s really great to see the growth and development of the sport and the way it’s being embraced more nationally,” he said. “From the college level all the way to the Olympic level, I think it’s getting a lot more attention. It definitely makes it easier to root for the team when I can bank on these days to help make my job easier and help us be successful.”
