‘This is unprecedented’: CHI Health in Nebraska reports spike in frostbite cases

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – CHI Health hospitals in Nebraska reported an increase in frostbite cases over the weekend.

Officials said at least 25 people were treated for frostbite at CHI Health hospitals amid subzero temperatures across the state.

In Lincoln alone, 12 people arrived at the emergency room for frostbite treatment.

Esther Rathjen, a burn unit manager with over 20 years of experience, said she’s never seen a frostbite season this busy.

“This is unprecedented,” she said.

As the frigid temps continue into this week, health officials ask that people look out for signs of frostbite.

“Watch out for your neighbors, watch out for your friends, you know,” Rathjen said.  “Be mindful of what people are doing.
