Thursday event seeks to protect Lincoln kids from sexual exploitation in video games

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Public Schools is sponsoring a community awareness event on Thursday aimed at protecting your family from child predators, in the last place you might expect.

Reports of children being sexually exploited over video games that have been rated as safe for kids have been growing.

That includes one of the most popular games in the world right now, Roblox.  Its rating was finally updated from “everyone 10 and older” to “teen” last month.

A Nebraska nonprofit leading Thursday’s event will focus on how we can all work together to keep children safe not only when playing video games, but also while browsing social media.

The Set Me Free Project will go over the latest apps that are raising concerns, how people looking to do your children harm begin the grooming process, and all of the ways this impacts mental health.

Just this month, Reuters reported that the online video game developer Roblox Corporation was being sued.

It’s accused of enabling a girl’s sexual and financial exploitation by adult men.

That same lawsuit also targets Discord, which is a popular chat platform for gamers, as well as the parent companies of Snapchat and Instagram.

Tonight’s event is being held at Scott Middle School starting at 6:30.
