Tornado confirmed in southeast Nebraska from Saturday’s round of storms

A line of strong storms brought heavy rain and strong winds to southeast Nebraska Saturday morning. Some were waking up to flash flooding, while others were picking up severe damage across town.

Sutton was one of those towns.

Some areas of rotation were embedded within the line of storms, prompting tornado warnings.

Hearing of the damage to Sutton within Clay County, the National Weather Service of Hastings sent out a damage survey team to assess.

The latest report confirms a brief tornado moved through, touching down on the northwest side, moving to the south and east. No one was injured.

According to the National Weather Service, small outbuildings were overturned and damaged, along with minor damage to homes in the early portions of the path.

Within downtown Sutton, a steel roof was peeled off and lofted about a block to the south (pictured below).

With damage to the brickwork on nearby buildings, the roof was likely dragged across the top of those buildings.

This is where the peak winds were estimated of 110 mph.

An old garage was also swept away on the southeast half of Sutton.

Finally, as one of its last stops, the tornado passed onto the golf course, according to the National Weather Service.

A maintenance shed was severely damaged, and several healthy trees were snapped.

Only six tornadoes have ever been observed between 6 and 7 a.m. in Nebraska, so this was a very unusual time of the day for a tornado.
