‘Total destruction’: Nebraska weather expert and eyewitness recalls Hallam tornado

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Channel 8’s Rod Fowler interviewed climatologist Ken Dewey on Wednesday, the 20th anniversary of the tornado that hit the village of Hallam.

Dewey, a retired University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor, was in Hallam that day and recounted the devastation.

“I was amazed at the absolute, total destruction,” he said. “There were homes where there were only a floor left, and the whole structure was gone.”

The tornado was 2½ miles wide, then the largest on record.
