Toxic algae alert issued for Nebraska lake

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A health alert was issued Friday for a lake in north-central Nebraska.

The state is warning of toxic blue-green algae at Calamus Reservoir in Garfield County.

Samples of the water surpassed the recommended threshold for microcystin, a toxin released by algae.

You should not swim in lakes with harmful algal blooms to avoid swallowing the water.

Recreational boating and fishing are still allowed.
