Tractor runs over dormant artillery shell in rural Gage County
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A dormant artillery shell was discovered Monday afternoon on a property in rural Gage County.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were sent to the property near Adams around 5 p.m. on a report of a suspicious device.
A man was doing work when he hit an artillery shell with his tractor, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Nebraska State Patrol’s bomb squad responded to the scene and determined the item appeared to be an artillery shell.
This is when the Nebraska Air National Guard arrived on the property and destroyed the shell, which was found to be “inert.”
The sheriff’s office said the shell was “highly corroded” and had been on the property “for some time.” It’s unknown how it got there.
