UPDATE: Train hits Lincoln woman

UPDATE:

A Lincoln woman is in the hospital after she was hit by a train Wednesday.

Crete police said shortly before 4:30 a.m.  An Amtrak hit 40–year–old Jessica Maxson.

“The individual was walking westbound and there was an eastbound train,” Chief Steve Hensel said.  “And so they were facing each other and the individual was struck by the train.”

Hensel said it happened right across the street from their police station.

He said a Star Care helicopter airlifted Maxson from the Crete Area Medical Center to Lincoln, where she continues to be treated with severe injuries.

Hensel said it’s rare for something like this to happen.

“Trains have lights, sounds and so forth that go with it,” he said.  “It’s pretty obvious that a train is coming down the tracks.  It doesn’t happen often.”

Police said they don’t know why Maxson didn’t get out of the way, but that there’s no indication that it was a suicide attempt.

He said this serves as a reminder for pedestrians.

“Stay off the train tracks,” Hensel said.  “They’re for trains, not for pedestrians.”

There are no updates at this time on Maxson’s condition.

Crete police said they’re continuing to investigate.
