Triple homicide suspect charged with assault at west Lincoln bus stop, police say

Sterling James - William Hill

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two Lincoln men have been charged following an investigation into an assault at a west Lincoln bus stop in January.

On Friday, investigators with the Lincoln Police Department cited and lodged 24-year-old Sterling James — who was already in jail on suspicion of murder — on suspicion of second-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

James also faces two counts of first-degree murder, first-degree murder of an unborn child and tampering with evidence after he was accused of murdering a Stromsburg couple and their unborn child on Jan. 15.

The other man involved in the assault — 41-year-old William Hill — was arrested on Monday and lodged in the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

Hill was arraigned in court on Tuesday, and his bond was set at 10% of $250,000.

Just after 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, officers were sent to the bus stop near Southwest 26th and South streets.

Witnesses told officers three people wearing masks assaulted a man when he approached the bus stop by tackling him to the ground, hitting and kicking him, and striking him with a baseball bat.

The third person involved in the assault — a 17-year-old male — has yet to be charged.

They then ran to a waiting white SUV at Southwest 27th Street and drove away.

The victim, a 50-year-old Lincoln man, was taken to the hospital with broken ribs, a cut to the top of his head which required staples, severe swelling and bruises.

According to an arrest affidavit, James worked with the 50-year-old victim and assaulted him because he was accused of sexually assaulting a minor in 2008.
