Trump approves Nebraska’s request for federal funds after ‘significant’ March storm

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska is set to receive federal funds after a severe winter storm caused millions of dollars in damage.

On Friday, Gov. Jim Pillen announced that President Donald Trump approved the state’s federal disaster declaration, which was submitted last month.

The storm on March 18 and 19 caused over $64.8 million in damage.  A majority of the damage stemmed from downed electrical lines and damaged utility poles.

Several counties are eligible for the federal funds, including Lancaster, Seward, York, Jefferson and Saline counties.

“This was a significant storm, impacting more than 25 counties and leaving many people without power – some for several days. I appreciate President Trump’s attention to Nebraska and his approval of this disaster request,” Pillen said in a statement. “Federal funding will help cover the tremendous costs that were incurred as a result of this weather event.”

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency is working with local agencies and public entities that are now eligible for assistance.
