Tuesday’s snow sticks around; Watching southern storm

That was a pretty good snow storm!  Not crazy amounts of snow, but enough for kids (and adults) to go sledding.  Lincoln officially received 6.5″ at the airport.  This makes today’s snow the highest one-day total since February 23, 2019 (8″).

This is a list of the highest snow totals I could find around the Channel 8 viewing area.

WAITING FOR SNOW TO MELT

The snow we picked up today is going to be around for a while.  Temperatures will struggle to reach 30° Wednesday – staying below freezing.

Thursday is our best chance, out of the next three days, to get above freezing.  Currently, I’m forecasting a high of 33°.  That’s right, a whopping 1° above freezing!  So there could be a little melting going on, but not much.

We will start to make a dent in the snow this weekend in to early next week as temperatures will get in to the middle 30°s to low 40°s.

NEW YEAR’S DAY STORM

The southern branch of upper-level energy (Tuesday’s snow was from the northern branch) will swing up through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri Thursday in to Friday.  With it, moisture will begin to spread north.  Initially, in the form of sleet/freezing rain and eventually changing over to snow.

There remains some question as to how far northwest the moisture will make it.  In other words, could it reach southeast Nebraska?  At this time I don’t think it will make it to Lincoln, but it could reach Falls City.

The reason I don’t think it gets too far northwest is due to northwesterly winds at the surface.  The wind should aid holding the moisture back.

We’ll continue to monitor the track of the storm over the next 36-72 hours.
