Two Grand Island teens tried evading officers after attempted car theft, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two teens in Grand Island were caught early Thursday morning after they tried stealing a vehicle, police say.

Around 1 a.m., officers were sent to a home near Walnut and Fifth Streets on a report of criminal mischief.

When officers arrived, they found a vehicle, parked outside of the home, with its driver’s side window shattered.

Police said it looked like someone had tried to steal the vehicle, which had an estimated $1,500 in damage.

During a search of the area, officers spotted a 15-year-old boy and chased after him after he didn’t follow their commands.

Officers tackled him to the ground and took the teen – who had a BB gun – into custody, according to police.

Nearby, officers found a 16-year-old boy, who was trying to hide from officers.  He was also taken into custody.

Both teens were arrested on suspicion of obstruction, criminal mischief and attempted vehicle theft.

The 15-year-old was additionally cited on suspicion of resisting arrest, police said.
